I know—I’m extremely late to the party. Estée Lauder’s Double Wear is a product that beauty gurus would rave about when I started my makeup and beauty journey at 18. I never tried it back then and I eventually forgot about it, especially since there have been a lot of foundation releases since then. I also thought, could a foundation formula stand the test of time? Initially, I thought not, but this foundation is still one a ton of makeup artists, beauty editors, and casual makeup consumers swear by, so I finally decided to get myself a bottle a few months ago. And honestly? I’m a little obsessed. Read on to find out what I think about the Double Wear foundation.
The Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation claims to have a fresh matte oil-free formula that’s supposed to wear for 24 hours. It’s supposed to have medium-to-full buildable coverage that’s waterproof, sweat-, humidity-, and transfer-resistant, oil-controlling, and non-caking. It also claims that it won’t settle into fine lines and pores. This foundation has a lot of claims—basically, it’s supposed to be lifeproof while also being comfortable and lightweight. It comes in 55 shades and in a luxurious glass bottle. It doesn’t come with a pump, but you can buy that separately.

This foundation launched in 1997 and became a cult classic—and I finally understand why. Let’s talk about its formula first: It has a light, runny consistency that easily blends into the skin. I use a brush to buff it into my face and it doesn’t collect in my pores or streak across my skin. It feels pretty light and yet it delivers full coverage—something I really love about it! I was actually worried that it would feel drying, but it doesn’t at all.
As for its finish, I wouldn’t say it’s completely matte. It looks more satin and natural, which I don’t mind at all. It doesn’t look flat, nor does it look like a mask. It still looks like skin, only so so much better. I think the foundation was reformulated in 2012 or 2013, so I’m not sure how the original Double Wear was, but I’m super into the formula that’s being sold now. I use the shade 2W2 Rattan and it’s a really great match for my skin tone.
I wouldn’t say that the formula is completely transfer-proof. I noticed that it still transfers a bit when I wear a mask, but it doesn’t completely rub off. It also has decent oil-control abilities and I don’t really touch up or blot my face whenever I use it. It plays extremely well with the other makeup products I use, especially creams and liquids. It stays in place when I blend other products into it, so I don’t have to worry about my liquid blushes or highlighters removing the foundation.

I can’t speak on the 24-hour wear claim, but it does last a solid day of wear, especially when you set it. It also wears nicely and looks fresh even by the end of the day.
Overall, I highly recommend the Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation if you’re looking for a full-coverage, reliable base. I will say that I wish it already came with a pump (I noticed that the only thing that stops me from using the foundation more than I do is that I don’t feel like pouring it out all the time). But if you don’t mind having to pour it from the bottle or spending extra on a pump, then I think you’ll really love how this foundation will look and feel on your skin.
